I held Kumakichi tightly, watching shyly all the other countries that came to attend the summer party. I smiled at my guest despite the fact that I knew most of them didn't really see me. Only a few smiled back at me, trying to be polite as they noticed my presence.

In truth, I'm pretty sure the only reason so many countries came today was because it was a party hosted by me and my neighbor and brother, America. He always managed to get all the attention and so everyone will attend his party. I'm almost certain that no one actually remembers that I'm one of the hosts or that the party is in Canadian territory.

Except for once, I didn't care.

I just hoped that [name] was here.

[Name], was the prettiest girl with the biggest heart that I've ever laid my eyes upon. [Country name], the country she represents, was possibly the only one who always noticed my presence and never once thought I was a ghost or anything similar. Since the moment we met, we've talked to each other regularly and we even called each other by our human names. It felt nice to say her name, it just easily slipped out of my tongue and to hear her say mines would send butterflies in my stomach.

I hugged Kumakiki even tighter, trying to find [name] within the horde of rambunctious countries.

Finally a saw a flash of [your hair color] and smiled as I followed her silhouette.

Eventually I went outside where there was, of course, a nicely and quite large wooden patio with many tables and chairs to accommodate the number of people, a pool, and many colorful tulips that were just blossoming around the sides of the small wooden fences. Also since it was getting dark and the stars just wasn't enough to light up the backyard, Alfred and I had set up numerous lanterns of vivid colors.

Alfred, being Alfred, also decided to set up a dj booth.

I actually only noticed when a song started playing, Patio Lanterns, a Canadian song. I was surprised that Alfred actually knew it, being the pro-American he was.

The lyrics and melody of the song wafted around the summer breeze as I took small steps to reach [name].

Our house had the biggest patio
Our house had all the summer shade
We had patio lanterns

When I finally approached her, I gently tapped her shoulder.

"Oh, Hi Mattie!" She greeted me with a dazzling smile.

"H-H-Hi [Name]!" I stuttered out, as I had lost my breath for a second.

She looked beautiful under the lights of the patio lanterns, the way her hair flowed from the summer breeze and how she smelled of light perfume. Her outfit [one that you prefer] complimented her body and made her shine in comparison to other girls I've seen.

I'd spend half the night making lemonade
Which we drank a lot
'Cause we were all so shy
Shy and nervous

"Umm… Matt?" [Name] waved her hand as I came back to reality.

"Sorry… what did you say?" I said.

"I said the punch you made tastes great!" She said happily.

"Oh… thank you."

I then, without realizing, attempted to grab myself some punch and accidently brushed my fingers on [name]'s delicate hand who was also reaching for another drink of punch.

"S-Sorry!" We both yelled out in unison, embarrassed, a tint of red covering our cheeks.

We looked at each other for a few seconds, before bursting out laughing at the awkwardness. Luckily no one really saw or heard us or it would have been even more awkward.

Who was gonna be
Who would be the first to dance
Who was gonna be
Who would be the first to kiss
Under those patio lanterns

As I managed to supress my laughter, I smiled nervously as [name] was now reducing the laughter to cute giggling.

It was now or never.

"Uhm… [name]… do… you want… to dance?" I asked tentatively, holding out my hand to her.

"Sure Matt!" She agreed, a bit of red resurfacing on her cheeks as she took my hand.

Holding her delicate hand somewhat tightly, I lead her away from the drinks and we started dancing on the patio. Afraid to scare her, we merely held hands as we danced to the song playing.

"Hey Mattie?"

"Yeah?"

"You know you could… you know…"

"Eh?" I tilted my head to the side in confusion at [name]'s blushing face.

Those patio lanterns
They were the stars in the sky
Those patio lanterns
Lighting up our lives
Those patio lanterns
They were the stars in the sky
Those patio lanterns
Lighting up our lives
Under those patio lanterns

"I think it's better if…" She said, as she gently took my hands and placed it on her hips, "you placed your hands here."

"Ohh…."

I felt my face heat up, just by her surprising action and for a few seconds I looked at the sides to make sure no one else saw.

It seemed everyone were too focused on their own dancing partners to care.

Luckily for me, Alfred was busy being the DJ to actually notice me.

If Alfred ever saw… who knows what he would say or do.

"It's just to make the dancing less… awkward. You know… so don't think anything of it!" [Name] said gently, blushing all the while.

"Oh okay." I answered, my face almost as red as hers and just a tad bit disappointed.

As we danced, my hands now placed on her hips, we danced a bit more comfortably now and at the atmosphere loosened up as we talking casually. At certain moments I'd twirl her around and she'd just laugh, that melodious noise I loved to hear, and we would continue happily talking.

And I was stuck on Joy
(That was her name)
We didn't talk much
She was a nervous girl
I was a nervous boy

We kept dancing to the song and occasionally we would say a few hello's to the other dancing couples that would sometimes dance near us. There was Hungary and Austria, Hong Kong and Taiwan, France and Seychelles, at this [name] warned Seychelles to be careful of him, there was even Liechtenstein and Switzerland dancing. Finally, for some odd reason, we also came across North Italy and Germany dancing, the latter seeming very humiliated or maybe just drunk, while Italy was ve-ing as they twirled around the whole backyard.

After a while, we danced silently for a few moments.

I took this chance to appreciate [name]'s beauty.

She was really beautiful and very sweet. Only she was able to understand me and to like me for the person no one else can see. She's always there for me no matter what happens.

I've decided a long time ago, possibly the moment we first talked, that no matter what
I'll always be there for her now and hopefully, forever.

We stuck together like glue on glue
Dancing to an old song
Bobby Vinton's blue on blue
Heartache on heartache

"Um… [name]?"

"Yes Mattie?" She said, looking at me with her cute [eye color] eyes.

"T-T-There's something I'd like to tell you…"

"Okay…? What is it?" She tilted her head as she stared at me curiously.

"Uhm… well…" I started, as I felt something get stuck in my throat and my palms started sweating.

I felt my heart beat very quickly, but I tried to swallow my fear.

"I… uhm… the first time we met… um… I was really… uhh… I mean… when I saw you tonight…. You looked lovely… and I… for so long… I… I…" I stuttered, my face turning as red as the maple leaf on my flag.

[Name]'s face stared at me quizzically and for a second I felt like a total idiot, but then her eyes sparkled as it seemed she understood what I was trying to say.

She then giggled lightly, suddenly hugging my neck, bringing her face closer.

"Don't worry, I understand what you mean Matthew." She said smiling warmly.

"I-I'm glad…" I muttered, still a bit embarrassed, as my hands held her more tightly around her waist.

Who was gonna be
Who would be the first to dance
Who was gonna be
Who would be the first to kiss
Under those patio lanterns

We danced, a little bit more intimately than before.

My hands now wrapped more protectively around her waist and her arms wrapped around my neck, with our faces very close to each other.

I was so happy that [name] accepted my lame confession, not that I actually managed to confess though… But she… loves me back right?

I never really said the words, but neither did she…

Was she waiting for me to tell her those words?

Well, she deserves to hear those three words and way more, because that's just how much I'm in love with her.

"[Name]?"

"Yes?"

"I… I love you."

"I love you too Mattie."

I lifted up her chin slowly so that I could stare at her beautiful eyes and gradually we both leaned in.

Those patio lanterns
They were the stars in the sky
Those patio lanterns
Lighting up our lives
Those patio lanterns
They were the stars in the sky
Those patio lanterns
Lighting up our lives
Under those patio lanterns

I can officially say, tonight was the best night of my life.
I managed to confess my feelings to my now wonderful girlfriend [name], and we shared a sweet kiss under, not only the stars but also under the vivid colorful patio lanterns.

*America's point-of-view*

I stared quizzically at the DJ booth I set up. Finally, out of frustration, I kicked the malfunctioning DJ booth repeatedly. Hopefully Matt won't notice it isn't working right and everyone else will be too busy to realize. All I'd really have to do would be to set up a drinking game to make sure no one would notice…

I looked at the DJ booth one more time, before kicking it again.

"WHY DO YOU KEEP REPEATING THE SONG?!"
